Jean-Philippe Mateta on Barcelona’s Radar Amid Premier League Interest – Crystal Palace Demand £50m

2 min read

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a top target for Barcelona and several Premier League clubs, but any potential suitors will need to meet Palace’s hefty £50 million valuation to secure his services.

Mateta’s Rise to Stardom

Over the past year, Mateta has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a fringe player into one of the most in-form strikers in Europe. Since Oliver Glasner took charge at Selhurst Park, the 27-year-old has netted 26 goals in 41 appearances, including six in his last five Premier League matches.

His goal-scoring prowess was also on display last summer when he bagged five goals for France en route to winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

Barcelona and Premier League Clubs Show Interest

According to reports from Spain, Barcelona have identified Mateta as a potential alternative to Robert Lewandowski as they look to bolster their attack. Meanwhile, The Sun claims that Lyon are also keen on the Frenchman, though a move could be complicated by the fact that their owner, John Textor, is also Crystal Palace’s largest shareholder.

Several Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring Mateta’s situation, particularly after contract talks with Palace stalled. While the Eagles recently triggered an option to extend his deal until 2027, they are believed to be open to a sale at the right price.

Crystal Palace’s Stance and Potential Departures

Palace originally signed Mateta from Mainz for just £9 million in 2022, meaning a £50 million sale would represent a massive profit. However, the club is reluctant to part ways with their star striker, especially as Glasner is already preparing for the departure of another key player, Marc Guehi.

Tottenham had a £70 million bid for the England defender rejected in January, but with Guehi’s contract expiring in 2026, he is widely expected to leave this summer.

Mateta Linked with Manchester United

It remains unclear which Premier League clubs are tracking Mateta, but following his brace in Palace’s 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, former Arsenal winger Paul Merson urged Manchester United to sign him.

“Man United should get Mateta, that’s what they need,” Merson told Sky Sports. “He’s a strong lad up front, playing at the top of his game, scoring goals, and working his socks off. He’s 100 times better than anyone Man United have in the front line.”

Mateta will have another chance to showcase his talent when Crystal Palace face Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round on Monday night.
