Andros Townsend Reflects on Emotional Return to Crystal Palace Despite Draw

2 min read

Former Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has shared his heartfelt sentiments about returning to Selhurst Park after featuring for Luton Town during Saturday’s 1-1 draw in South London.

Townsend, who left Crystal Palace in 2021 to join Everton, returned to South London for the first time since featuring for Everton against the Eagles in the FA Cup back in 2022. This return marked an emotional moment for Townsend, who had suffered an ACL injury during that fixture, sidelining him for 413 days after requiring surgery.

Reflecting on his return, Townsend expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from the home fans, describing it as “amazing” to have a positive memory at the place where he spent five great years as a player.

He recalled the touching moment of receiving a standing ovation from all four sides of the stadium when he hobbled off due to injury, emphasizing the enduring appreciation from the Palace fan base throughout his rehabilitation journey.

Townsend’s gesture of applauding all sides of the stadium after the game was his way of showing appreciation to the loyal fans who supported him during his time at the club. He expressed his gratitude for the positive memory and the ongoing support from the Palace supporters.

Despite leaving Selhurst Park on a happier note than his former teammates on Saturday, Townsend remains respectful of his time at the club, where he made a significant impact with 185 appearances, 16 goals, and 28 assists.

While many appreciate Townsend’s return to Premier League football with Luton after his injury struggles, his assist for Woodrow’s late equalizer against Crystal Palace was met with mixed feelings among the fans.
