December 8, 1979: Crystal Palace Stun European Champions at Selhurst Park

1 min read

In a clash that defied expectations, Crystal Palace boldly faced the reigning European champions, Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest, at Selhurst Park on December 8, 1979. Despite Forest’s mythical status as European champions, there was no deference shown to the eminent side from south London.

This encounter took place shortly after Palace’s legendary promotion under manager Terry Venables, a feat achieved in front of a record-breaking crowd exceeding 50,000 during a spirited afternoon against Burnley at Selhurst Park.

Under the leadership of the revered Brian Clough, known not only for his current Forest side but also for guiding Derby County to a title seven years prior, Nottingham Forest boasted a lineup filled with football legends. The likes of Peter Shilton in goal, alongside Viv Anderson, John Robertson, Martin O’Neill, and the £1 million man Trevor Francis in outfield positions.

Palace, featuring soon-to-be legends like Kenny Sansom and Vince Hilaire, braced themselves for a formidable challenge. Despite surviving numerous close calls, with goalkeeper John Burridge earning his keep and more, Ian Walsh eventually found the back of the net, securing a historic 1-0 victory for Crystal Palace over the European champions.
