Crystal Palace linked with host of interesting January transfers

3 min read

Given the clubs move to appoint a foreign manager in the summer, it comes as a surprise that so many Crystal Palace transfer targets appear to be domestically based. Though the club has found some success in shopping outside of the UK, many of the clubs most impressive signings in the recent era have come from the UK. The signing of Odsonne Edouard, for example, shows an interest in the Scottish markets. Other signings expected to arrive in the January transfer window, then, are expected to follow a similar style overall.

One name being heavily linked with the Eagles is Reyes Cleary. The youngster has come through at West Bromwich Albion, and has impressed in the youth teams by scoring 11 goals in just 11 games. Links with German clubs exist, but it is believed the player is keen to stick around in the UK for a while longer. The 17-year-old has been favourably compared to Romelu Lukaku. Given the clubs striking options at the moment, it would be interesting to see if Cleary could force his way into the striking rotation early.

Another player being linked who has more experience is John Swift. We have previously noted the interest from Palace, but the 26-year-old looks set to make the move as early as January. The Reading midfielder is out of contract at the end of the year, and has played himself into fine form having taken the reigns from the recently departed Michael Olise. Given the fact Olise is now an Eagle, the arrival of Swift would represent smart business.

Seven goals and five assists in his first nine games this season had teams deeply interested, and Palace might need to fend off the likes of Burnley and Norwich City if they wish to land the midfielder.

Big name signings not expected in the January window

Palace fans have been getting excited naturally about the links with Aaron Ramsey. The Wales midfield could find it easy to locate an opinion on living in South London, with several former international teammates having played at Palace recently. However, the reports around a move for the player – even on loan – are believed to be nothing more than reports from Italy.

Although the 30-year-old is believed to be available, a combination of the wages and the fee, as well as interest from larger clubs, means that any move for Ramsey would be deemed to be highly unlikely at this current moment in time.

However, another name that could have more substance is that of Borja Mayoral. The Spaniard is currently on loan at AS Roma, but is finding gametime hard to come by as Jose Mourinho looks to tighten his rotation at Trigoria. As such, it is expected that Palace could look to try and pick up the player on a loan deal. With links to teams back in Spain, though, it might be tough to convince the striker to take on another loan option where game time could not be promised.

Whatever happens in the January window, though, it looks like Palace will be busy.
